Introduction It's shortly before sundown on a desert planet somewhere in the outskirts of colonized space. Martin the Marine is walking up to Freddy the Firebat who is guard duty. Martin: "Hey man! What's up?" Freddy: "I'm bored... Remind me why we're here..." Martin: "Some scientist found something anomalous about this star so they built this outpost so they could study it." Freddy: "Oh, yeah, right..." Martin: "Want a beer?" Gary: "Sure..." Freddy: "Who? What? Ah... Gary, come on... That's not funny man..." Gary the Ghost decloaks a few paces away from them. Martin: "Here!" Martin throws a can to Gary and Freddy... Freddy: "Found anything?" Gary: "Rocks, sand, dirt, more rocks, more sand... The usual..." A few minutes pass then something happens up in the sky. The stars shakes slightly and there is a swirling bright light. Martin: "Holy mother of..." Some hours later they all wake up. Their heads hurt and the metallic floor is cold. Freddy: "What just happend?" Ghost: "Don't know, but I don't reconize this place" A holographic projection flickers to life in front of them. A white glowing ball of energy with something that looks like a face in the middle appears. Evil Alien: "We have taken you from your planet. You are to fight to the death in our arena for our amusement." Martin: "And if we don't?" Evil Alien: "You don't have a choice." Martin, Freddy and Gary: "Crap..." Gameplay You play as one of the unlucky terrans that were kidnapped from Vokor and you try to kill all the creatures and aliens in the arena. The arena is made up of 16 rooms, arranged 4 by 4, with doors to the neighbouring rooms. The doors will open and close at random. In the arena there are other abducted soldiers (zealots) and strange creatures (zerglings, hydralisks, maybe a modified ultralisk) from all over the galaxy. It is supposed to be a team game, with 3 players as of now, but the difficulty will be scaled to suit the number of players so you can play it solo (but it'll be hard). More units can (and probably will) be added. If anyone out there has any ideas or would like to the actual mapping for this level the please post here. I think it's a good idea for an map and it could be fun to play, but I have a lot of other projects right now so if anyone else wants to give it a try they are welcome to. I don't need it right now...
Hmm, i think it is a great idea... i can help with any adn all mapping, suggestions: -Mirrors of each guy that randomly spawn every now and then. -Guys can find powerups. -Eventually they figure out things within the arena that helps them destroy the aliens. •Shooting certain kinds of units causes sharp objets to fly far enough to possible hit the aliens controlling the arena. (Killing a Devouring One causes one of them to realize this.) •The controls to the arena also happen to be the controls to the ship (One of them sees an alien reaching over to a lever he hasn't used yet which makes the ship seem to turn left-special event trigger, causes the men to "fall" to the left [move to the left order every half a second, also can happen in other directions]) •If they kill a certain unit in the right place directly in front of the controls, a piece of the unit will hit the controls, causing damage! (Triggers an alien to say 'Hey! Stop hurting the controls!', a line of explosions move towards the controls, and upon hitting it, does damage. [Controls must be hit 5 times to destroy them, Devouring Ones spawn very rarely, they must be killed in the right location too.]) Just some ideas.
Maybe an Ultralisk? lol You have some good ideas but you really should try to learn mapping yourself Ask some knowledgable people here and look around the net for manuals and tips. It's always better to present ideas that are at least in alpha stage. Besides, it's a nice feeling when you complete a project on your own and can show it to the public and get their feedback and possibly tweak things to finalize everything. Working in a team is also cool but... I don't know, I guess I prefer to do things my way because then it'll turn out exactly how I want it (or phail immediately which I won't be able to blame on someone else )
mapping is learned not by a handbook, not by another person... mapping is learned by playing. if you want to make a map that will be played by the masses, then you must know what the masses like in a map. you must know what they yearn for, what they accept. players want the following 3 things: -a challenge or plenty of room to strategize -easy to understand and easy to use concepts and abilities -no gay cheats after that, its all about your ability to twist and bend the triggers to your will, and the actual drive to complete a map, despite the copying and pasting of triggers. i mean, sure, a few things can be learned from other players... but true map making comes from imagination.
