I guess a good map is a map balanced for all races..
It has to be a good size, have plenty of expansions and the map must also allow room for strats I guess.

    some good "pro" maps:

    Python http://www.gosugamers.net/starcraft/bilder/maps/pic/(4)Python1.1_logo.jpg
    Peaks of Baekdu http://www.gosugamers.net/starcraft/bilder/maps/pic/708b.jpg
    Blue Storm http://www.gosugamers.net/starcraft/bilder/maps/pic/(2)BlueStorm1.1_logo.jpg
    Andromeda http://www.gosugamers.net/starcraft/bilder/maps/pic/(4)Andromeda1.0_logo.jpg
    Othello http://www.gosugamers.net/starcraft/bilder/maps/pic/(4)Othello1.1_logo.jpg
    Troy http://www.gosugamers.net/starcraft/bilder/maps/pic/(4)Troy1.0_logo.jpg

what is special/better about these maps compared to others are:
-good balance (some exceptions, on pro level balance is hard :))
-many oppertunies for creativity - strategy and microwise
    -big enough, interesting expansions

Genereally balance and creativity is KEY in both standard and custom maps IMO. For UMS/custom games I hope for some tower defenses in sc2, but im not really interested in rpg's, I think thoese are uninteresting.

Your main doesn't have to be on high ground. It could be surrounded by cliff or water. [IMG]
^ Main is surrounded by cliffs.
But yes. Only one entrance for the beginning of the game, this gives people a chance to wall off the entrance with buildings.

^ Like so (but ignore the units there :D).

exe some maps have expansions behind there mainbase, which leads to intereting gameplay too. the small choke for the main base is for balance reasons mostly.

    two questions:
first, is there a better way to get a map in an image, the way simbob posted, than to open it in the editor and take several screen shots and piecing them together?
second, what editor were python and bluestorm created in? do you need a special editor to place those ramps?

1: The way I and Simbob posted it probably the best.
2: I dont think so, perhaps its special created doodads.

    Melee- requires balance.
The one entrance/cliff is for chokes, to help guard against the early game rush, to aid the Terran against Protoss two-gate, and to protect against the ultraling end game.

Also, there should not be any way to reach behind a main w/o transport, as tankable mains (mineral line can be hit by tanks, lurks, goons) are ****ing annoying.

UMS - Balance is second, creativity is first.
Cmon, everyone wants to play a creative map first. Blood Pressure Marathon anyone? Sure its annoying when YOU get that overlord, but its fun, right?

Ah i figured it out. Downloaded a map editor called Scmdraft. You can "save image" which is what i wanted. And you can basically put ramps-of-sort wherever you want.
