Well, I just saw 9 about 2 hours ago. Here is my review. **There are no real spoilers here, but if you do not want any information whatsoever, then either stop reading or skip to the last 2 paragraphs.** A lot of people might be discouraged at first because it is animated. But let me tell you, Tim Burton and Shane Acker have made a masterpiece. It's not a movie that everyone may like; it takes lots of respect for quality film and story development to truly appreciate. 9 is packed from start to finish with action. You are thrown into the story from the very beginning. One thing about 9 is, you will be slightly confused until the end. But even so, the story and character development is fantastic. You really become attached to the little ragdolls. I can't really explain it very well, all I can say is that it is a very rich story. The ending to 9 is in a word, awesome. It is one of my favorite movie endings I have ever seen. My only real problem with the movie was that it was a little too brief. Things went a tad too fast. The movie was still great, but I think a little more background on the dolls would have been good. I guess Burton did this on purpose though, to let the audience use their imagination. I give this movie 4 and a half stars out of 5 because it came and went a little too fast. Still, it is a great way to end your summer. It is easily one of my favorite movies of the year, right up there with Star Trek, District 9, and Public Enemies. Even if you are not a fan of animated movies, I would advise everyone to go out and see 9, or wait until it comes out on DVD and Blu-Ray. It is a must see.
A good review. I have been meaning to watch this ever since I first saw the trailer in theaters a few months ago. A lot of Tim Burton's movies are cult classics (The Nightmare Before Christmas anyone?) and they continue to fascinate me! I will probably go and give this a viewing sometime next week. Thanks for the review. It only cemented my desire to watch '9'
I just saw it less than an hour ago, so here goes... I found the movie 9 to be a highly developed, well-portrayed film that lacked in one thing: Longevity. As Fenix stated, the entire film was action. Simply action. There was little to no background for several of the characters, and an extended edition with another sixty minutes of story would be greatly appreciated. I wouldn't even mind how long it would be. This movie definitely deserves much more, and could even have been broken in to two films. I give it a 4.5 Overall. The spoiler contains the film broken down in to categorized scores, along with... well, spoilers. Spoiler The storyline was well thought-out, well organized, and portrayed in exactly the way it should have been. Had the film been based on a book, I doubt there would have been a visible difference in the story. The history of the wars and the main character was slowly revealed at the perfect pace for that constant tugging of curiosity in the film to be present. While 9's character slowly developed over time, most of the other numbers already had personalities from the moment the viewer meets them. This is ideal, as we are watching 9 birthed in to the world, whereas the other numbers have already been around for a while. 5/5 for Storyline. The actual film content, on the other hand, was lacking. The backgrounds of each and every number other than the main character could have been more developed. When and where they awakened. The short flash-back of how they had come to the church sanctuary was minuscule compared to what could and should have been. 3/5 for Content. The scenes and camera angles throughout the film were fairly powerful. The film could have been a bit more darker overall, and slightly more gore (I didn't see a drop of blood) would be more than acceptable. The artistic designs for the ragdolls and the robots were exquisitely contrasting in complexity, with a closer attention to plain detail on the former and a higher quantity of details on the latter. I especially enjoyed the creativity in The Machine's minions; my favourites were the flying spy and the serpent-like seducer. 4.5/5 for Visual Styling.
